Philip "Buck" Foltz
Mr. Foltz was appointed to the School Board in September of 1996 and re-elected in 2006. He is currently the Board President, chairs the Athletics/Transportation committee, and serves on the Personnel/Policy and Negotiations committees. He recently accepted a position with the Baraga-Houghton-Keweenaw Child Development Board as their Father to Dads Coordinator. Foltz was previously employed as an equipment operator for the City of Houghton Department of Public Works. He managed the Dee Stadium from 1991-1994, and still serves on the stadium's operation committee. Foltz has also been a member of the Houghton Volunteer Fire Department since 1992. Most recently he participated in building an outdoor ice skating facility in west Houghton. Foltz and his wife Karen live in west Houghton with their three children, Mindy, Tristan, and Annika. Mr. Foltz's Board term expires in June of 2014.
Nels Christopherson
Dr. Christopherson has lived in Houghton for over 35 years, first as a student at MTU and now as a teacher there. He is currently the Board Vice-President, chair of the Community Affairs/Legislation committee, and a member of the Finance and Negotiations committees. He is also a member of the CCISD Board of Education. He is an enthusiastic supporter of the Gremlins and Houghton, and the Copper Country in general. He enjoys trout fishing, cross country skiing, and especially taking saunas! Dr. Christopherson's Board term expires in June of 2012.
Dan Crane
Mr. Crane is a 1982 Houghton High School graduate, a 1986 graduate of Michigan Technological University, and is currently employed by Upper Peninsula Power Company as a regional account executive. Crane and his wife, Mary, have two daughters; one currently attending Houghton schools and the other a recent graduate. He is currently the Board Treasurer and also chairs the Finance committee and serves on the Athletics/Transportation and Personnel/Policy committees. Crane enjoys sports and strawberry farming. He is also a member of the Chassell Lions Club, Hancock Rotary, and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Crane's Board term expires in June of 2011.
Mark Mohler
Mr. Mohler was recently elected to a 4-year term on the Board of Education. He is currently the Board Secretary. He graduated from The College of St. Scholastica with a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy in 1993. He and his family moved to Houghton in 1994. Mark worked at Portage Health System for three years before becoming the Rehab Supervisor, for 12 years, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He has been a staff P.T. at Portage Health System for the past two years. Mark and his wife, Susan, have been married for 22 years. They have two children; Magn (HHS graduate 2008), who is in her fourth year of college and Paul (HHS graduate 2010), who is currently serving in the Air Force. He is currently chair of the Personnel/Policy committee and serves on the Community Affairs/Legislation and Facilities Committees. Mr. Mohler's Board term expires in June of 2013.
Brad Baltensperger
Dr. Baltensperger has served on the Houghton-Portage Township School Board since 1988. He is currently the chair of the Negotiations committee and serves on the Finance and Curriculum/Student Achievement committees. Baltensperger was president of the Michigan Association of School Boards, 1999-2000, and led the establishment of the statewide Accountability Task Force. He also helped establish the Copper Country Association of School Boards. Baltensperger received his education at the University of Nebraska and Clark University. He is professor of geography and chair of the Department of Education at Michigan Technological University. He enjoys cross country skiing, swimming, gardening, choral singing and traveling. Dr. Baltensperger's Board term expires in June of 2012.
Crystal Verran
Crystal Verran was elected to the Board for a 4-year term in May 2010. She is chair of the Facilities committee and serves on the Community Affairs/Legislation and Curriculum/Student Achievement committees. Crystal works at Michigan Technological University in the marketing and communications department, where she is the assistant director. Prior to serving as the assistant director, Crystal was a graphic designer within the department. She is currently a member of the Houghton High School Gremlins All Sports Booster Club. Crystal and her husband, Derrick, have two children, Zachary and Samantha, who both attend Houghton schools. She enjoys camping, fishing, and watching her children participate in hockey, swimming, and soccer. Crystal's term expires in June of 2014.
Robert Wheeler
Robert Wheeler was recently elected to a 4-year term on the Board. He is chair of the Curriculum/Student Achievement committee, and a member of the Facilities and Athletics/Transportation committees. Mr. Wheeler is employed as a land survey technician with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He has lived in the Copper Country for over 15 years, and is married with two grown children, and four children attending Houghton schools. Mr. Wheeler states he enjoys fishing, kayaking, basketball, and "just raising my kids." Mr. Wheeler's Board term expires in June of 2011.
